‘Looking into your eyes I can see beauty, looking into your soul I can see passion, looking into your mind I can see intelligence, but looking into your heart I can see the world’
This poem was given to me recently, and I think it goes a long way to explain my art. I create unique pieces, using my passion for colour, collage and exotic imagery. I explore my mind, my heart and ultimately this wonderful place we live, earth.
My inspiration comes from many places and things. Hmmm, where should I start?… butterflies, spirals, feathers… Chinese/Japanese/Asian influences… Alice in Wonderland… Dr Seuss… dragonflies, rainbows, leaves and shells… Buddhism and other religions… chakras and crystals… the martial arts… the heavens and stars… astrology, tarot, runes, Zen… fashion and fetish… light and dark… and many other places in between. Some full of insight and meaning, some more playful and whimsical.
Having trained in fashion years ago, I continue to use textiles in my work. Using that tactile hands-on approach and love of colour, I can feel my way to expressing my passion for life. Found objects and recycling feature in my work, most recently beautiful vintage kimono fabrics as well as pre-loved tea towels, linens and tablecloths. I nearly always work with natural fibres (cotton, linen, silks, bamboo, hemp etc)in keeping with my environmental concerns. I enjoy hand-dyeing, painting and printing my own fabrics and combining them with various other fabrics in clothing, scarves, cushions and throws. Collage (paper/textile/found object) comes to the fore in my canvas wall pieces and my range of handmade greeting cards.
