Mixed Media Painting
I have been involved in art for as long as I care to remember, as a child, a student and as a teacher producing works in various media in drawing, collage, printmaking, paper making, threads and textiles and painting. I have been fortunate that I have been able to teach what I love doing. This experience has given me a wealth of knowledge and a passion for the creative process using a variety of disciplines, media and styles to express my intentions. So then to me as a multimedia artist, each artwork is about process-process of learning about and understanding a place and people, process of creating ideas, the process of challenging myself in variety of media and techniques and the process of art making. The artwork then becomes a reflection of that process and as such can be eclectic and varied in style and theme.
Though the nature of my work varies from time to time, recurrent themes are about connections and stories of our interdependent & changing relationship with each other and our land. Sometimes this leads to abstract interpretations in studies of the structural elements of colour, shape, pattern, texture & rhythm and at other times a more representational, realistic approach is utilized depending on the intention of the work. The textural element is also important to me and I invite the viewer to use not only their visual sense, but also their tactile sense in experiencing my artwork.
While producing artwork predominantly in mixed media painting, using modelling paste, found objects, text and more, I am constantly drawn to colour and the vibrancy of colour just like the Romantics, Impressionists and Fauves.
