Starting with white silk, Helen uses various techniques such as hand painting, soy wax resist, gutta, shibori, immersion dyeing, rust and indigo to create colour and design.
Once the dyes are fixed by steaming, everything is washed and ironed. The fabric is then ready to be cut, stitched and embellished to create individual garments. Using these techniques Helen also makes fabric lengths, scarves, wall pieces and cards and has recently introduced a range of cotton and linen indigo-dyed clothing.
Helen teaches workshops in silk painting and nuno felting around Adelaide and the Hills. She joined the Collective in 2004.
